What changes in ISO 9001:2026

Six changes listed in its own foreword.

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. It is the sixth edition and it supersedes ISO 9001:2015 and its A1:2024 amendment on climate change. Your 2015 certificate does not expire because a new version exists: the transition deadline is set by the IAF, and that binding resolution has not been published yet.

Terms and definitions in clause 3

Clause 3 now includes a limited set of fundamental ISO management-system terms. ISO 9000 remains the normative reference for the rest of the vocabulary.

Quality culture and ethical behaviour

No longer a statement of intent: they are now requirements, in leadership (5.1.1), awareness (7.3) and the environment for the operation of processes (7.1.4). They are audited by what you do, not by what you declare.

Risks and opportunities separated

What used to sit in one clause is now split into 6.1.2 and 6.1.3, each with its own actions. Their effectiveness is evaluated separately too, in the analysis of data and in the management review.

Stronger change management

Clause 6.3 widens what has to be considered. What is new: communicating the change, evaluating its effectiveness and reviewing its results. Planning it is no longer enough.

Annex A expanded

It clarifies structure, terminology and the purpose of the requirements, including nuances that have caused arguments in audits for years. It is informative: it adds, removes and changes nothing.

Annex B removed

It pointed to other ISO/TC 176 standards. Those references now live in Annex A and on the committee’s own website.

What about climate change? It is not on that list because it is not new: it arrived in 2024 with amendment A1 and is now integrated into the body of the standard (4.1 and 4.2). If you already applied it, there is nothing to do.

How we implement it

Frequently asked questions

ISO 9001

How long does it take to implement ISO 9001?+
It depends on your organisation's size and starting point. In the initial diagnosis we give you a plan with realistic deadlines; most projects are completed in a few months of agile, continuous work.
What do I need to get started?+
Just a first conversation. Write to hola@tuconsultor.com or book a meeting: we understand your situation, answer questions and propose the right service level, with no commitment.
Can it be integrated with my other management systems?+
Yes. We design integrated systems (quality, environment, information security, compliance…) so you share documentation, audits and indicators and reduce maintenance workload.
